Halloween

Halloween hebben we gevierd met Suzanne, Casper en Marjolein in de Meadows 8. De meisjes verkleed als heks en Casper als BenTen, dus we konden op pad. Best spannend maar als je snoep wilt moet je echt aan bellen. Was erg leuk maar na 2 straten hadden de heksjes geen zin meer om te lopen en was een vliegende bezemsteel wel handig geweest. Thuis gekomen werd het snoep uitgebreid bekeken en geproefd, behalve door Famke. Die vind het allemaal prachtig maar ze houdt niet van snoep dus vroeg alleen maar wie wat wilde, zodat ze het kon verdelen, de Bounty's liggen hier op opa te wachten!! Ook nog een foto, zonder Fam want die wil dat nog steeds niet! BenTen was even boeven vangen.

Atlantis Hotel deel 2

Vandaag met Suzanne en de kinderen naar het Atlantis Hotel geweest om 'The Lost Chambers' aquarium te bezoeken. De kinderen zijn namelijk vrij omdat het Eid vakantie (einde van de Ramadan) is. Het aquarium was erg indrukwekkend, niet heel groot maar heel mooi. Hieronder een paar foto's. Aan het einde van dit stukje een artikel wat in de Telegraaf stond over het Atlantis hotel. Volgens mij zijn er een aantal feiten iets aangedikt, maar veel zal het niet schelen.

Let in de rechter foto hierboven op de duiker (op dat moment zaten er 3! duikers in de tank) en de ramen van de hotelkamers op de achtergrond die uitkijken op het aquarium!!! Je verzint het gewoon niet!

Uit de Telegraaf: Duurste hotel ter wereld geopend

AMSTERDAM - Na het hoogste gebouw ter wereld mag Dubai nu ook 's werelds duurste en meest luxueuze hotel aan zijn curriculum toevoegen. Het majestueuze Atlantis Hotel, met een prijskaartje van ruim 1 miljard euro, opende gisteren zijn deuren voor het grote publiek. Eigenaar Kerzner International Resorts spaarde kosten noch moeite om van het resort de meest indrukwekkende toeristische attractie in de Arabische Golf te maken. Op 20 november 2008 vindt de officiële opening van hotel Atlantis plaats en wordt nu al de duurste en meest spectaculaire opening van een hotel ooit genoemd. Er komt 20 miljoen euro bij kijken om dit luxe hotel in Dubai te openen. Hoe ziet de opening van hotel Atlantis in Dubai eruit? Tijdens de opening zal zangeres Kylie Minogue een optreden geven van 60 minuten. Voor dit optreden krijgt Kylie Minogue 2,5 miljoen euro. Dit optreden schijnt nu al het best betaalde optreden te worden in de geschiedenis. Naast dit optreden zal er groots vuurwerk te zien zijn, dat zelfs het vuurwerk tijdens de Olympische Spelen in Beijing moet overtreffen. Voor het vuurwerk geeft Atlantis 3,5 miljoen euro uit. Het vuurwerk zal de gehele kust (zo’n 43 km) van Palm Jumeirah doen verlichten. Verder is er uiteraard aan de catering gedacht. Viersterren Michelin chefs Giorgio Locatelli en Nobu Matsuhisa zullen de gehele catering verzorgen. Naar verwachting komen er 2000 gasten naar deze spectaculaire opening. De uitgenodigde gasten hoeven hun vlucht naar Dubai natuurlijk niet zelf te betalen, dit wordt gedaan door het hotel. Atlantis Hotel Het Atlantis Hotel telt 1.539 kamers en wordt geflankeerd door een superdeluxe-aquaresort en witte palmboomstranden. Samen beslaan ze 114 hectare (zo'n 64 voetbalvelden) op het artificieel aangelegde eiland Palm Jumeirah. Het waterpark omvat onder meer een marinejachthaven, tientallen attracties, een vijf kilometer lange wildwaterrivier en een aquarium met 65.000 vissen en 24 dolfijnen. De dolfijnen werden speciaal van de Solomoneilanden in de Stille Oceaan overgevlogen in peperdure vliegtuigen met aquatanks. Na zich te hebben uitgeleefd in het waterpretpark kunnen gasten zich terugtrekken in hun suites. Voor 18.000 euro kun je overnachten in het Bridge Penthouse, dat drie slaapkamers en een gouden eettafel heeft. In plaats van muren is in de slaapkamers geopteerd voor glazen wanden die uitkijken op de aquaria met exotische en zeldzame vissoorten. In de prijs is ontbijt meegerekend, voor lunch en avondmaal kun je terecht in één van de zeventien restaurants, waarvan er drie worden uitgebaat door chefs met Michelinsterren. Avondentertainment wordt voorzien door Cirque du Soleil en er zijn plannen voor de bouw van een gigantisch casino. Het meeste bijzondere aan het hotel is dat het suites krijgt onder de naam ‘The Lost Chambers’ die uitzicht hebben op de oceaan. Deze suites bevinden zich onder het water oppervlak.

Famke op School

Famke zit nu voor het derde jaar op de Dubai British School. Ze is nu een groot meisje in Year 1 (op de grote school!) en gaat keurig elke dag in haar uniform schooljurkje, witte sokken en zwarte schoenen naar school. We zijn erg blij met de school maar toch vind ik dat de kinderen al veel moeten doen. Elke ochtend wordt er keurig in een rij buiten gewacht tot de juf (Miss Edwards) de kinderen komt halen. Tijdens de schooldag hebben ze dan taal en rekenen maar ook sport, zwemmen, muziek, bibliotheek, frans en arabisch!!! Ja, Famke telt zonder problemen in het arabisch tot 10 (niet dat ik kan controleren of ze het goed doet.....). En elke avond is er wel iets van huiswerk dat we moeten maken, zoals schrijven en boekjes lezen.

Maar wat ik jullie niet wilde onthouden was het bibliotheek boek waar Famke deze week mee thuis kwam.

'Umm schat, kun je volgende week weer een engels boek uitzoeken?'

Atlantis Hotel op de Palm

Vandaag zijn we even met de auto de Palm Jumeirah opgereden. Ongelofelijk! Overal wordt gebouwd, gebouwd en gebouwd! Op de stam van de Palm zijn al veel appartementen af maar aan de hotels wordt nog druk gebouwd. Het 'Atlantis Hotel' ( http://www.atlantisthepalm.com/ ) daarentegen is bijna af en wordt over 5 dagen geopend. Het Atlantis Hotel staat op de 'crescent' van de Palm, helemaal bovenaan dus. Een tunnel brengt je hiernaar toe. Het is gigantisch groot, er zijn meer dan 1300 kamers. Verder natuurlijk veel restaurants en bars, een groot waterpark, een aquarium, dolfijnen, het kan niet op. Over 5 dagen dus de grote opening, we zijn benieuwd en zullen er snel een keer heen gaan. Dit verhaal wordt dus vervolgd....

Floortje Zwemmen

Floortje zwemt! De laatste week heeft ze de smaak echt te pakken gekregen en de kurkjes moesten af! We moeten nu wel erg oppassen want ze wordt wel een beetje overmoedig maar kijk zelf maar hoe het gaat. Zwemles wil ze nog niet dus daar wachten we nog even mee. Fam zwemt ook al heel goed en heeft nu 2 keer per week zwemles maar Fam mogen we niet filmen.....

Springen is ook leuk dus hier een grote sprong!

Zomer in Nederland

Een groot deel van de zomer zijn Famke Floortje en ik in Nederland geweest omdat het in Dubai toch wel erg warm werd. De laatste 2 weken kwam Thijs ook. We hebben veel mensen gezien, veel dingen gedaan en in veel bedden geslapen! Van Aalsmeer tot Assen via Cadzand, Aberdeen, San Gimignano en tussendoor ook nog even naar Putten!Hieronder een kleine indruk van onze weken.

Zee hondjes kijken in Pieterburen met poezeoma. Famke vond vooral de ziekenauto voor de zeehondjes mooi.

Stampen in plassen net na een regenbui met nieuwe Jip en Janneke laarzen is toch wel feest. De laarzen hebben we maar bij oma in Aalsmeer laten staan want die hebben we in Dubai niet nodig!

Gisteren avond naar Bon Jovi geweest met Suzanne en het was echt fantastisch!

Abu Dhabi rocks to Bon Jovi

Abu Dhabi: The lights went out and 17,000 people roared, screamed and jumped up and down, and Bon Jovi weren't even on stage yet. Cameras and phones were lifted high waiting for stage lights to reveal the hard rock legends in the Middle East for the first time in their 25-year career. This was a historical moment of sorts, and not just another concert.

"I've travelled a long way to get here tonight, Abu Dhabi," Jon Bon Jovi, the group's lead singer, tells the audience, and the crowd goes wild. Aside from the fact that he could have said anything and the crowd would have still cheered, what makes Jon Bon Jovi more than just a musician but an entertainer, is his ability to engage the crowd.

He signals for the band to stop playing and he puts out the microphone towards the audience. "It's my life. It's now or never. I just wanna live forever," the crowd sings. Even a 15-year-old boy who could hardly see over the shoulders of people in front of him memorised every single song verbatim.This was proof that Bon Jovi's music stood the test of time not just to entertain their generation but the generations to come.

One of the biggest hits of the night was "Runaway". Ironically, this song was written and recorded in 1983, and is arguably the song that brought the group to instant fame after being played on New York radio stations. That connection explains why it's one of the few older songs that they still sing live. After five songs, Jon went back stage to change and gave Richie Sambora, who joined the group in 1983, a chance to sing "I'll Be There For You," which was released as a single in 1988. Jon came back and sang, "Who Says You Can't Go Home," which was inspired by their love for New Jersey and released in 2006. This was hard rock at its finest, bred straight from New Jersey, USA, and it was here in Abu Dhabi. That in its self was a testament to the diversity of this capital.

The setting was spectacular on its own. The changing lights of the Emirates Palace as a backdrop to the stage; a full moon; thousands of people who all seemed to move in synch and a soft breeze that made you forget the 38 degree Celsius temperature. After two hours of live music, Bon Jovi signed off with, "Good night Abu Dhabi."

Cloud seeding experiment has thundering success

Al Ain: Tuesday's thunderstorm in the western and southern parts of the emirates was a result of a cloud seeding (artificial rain) test conducted by the weather authorities.

The storm produced intermittent rain in parts of Abu Dhabi and Dubai. It was a surprising phenomenon in the late-spring month of May for the public and some weathermen. An official of the National Centre of Meteorology and Seismology (NCMS) on Wednesday confirmed the centre had carried out cloud seeding tests on clouds that came in from southern Saudi Arabia.

'Residents and weathermen were baffled by the occurrence of thunderstorms in May. "I was amazed to hear about a thunderstorm," said a weatherman requesting anonymity. He said it was an unusual development of CB clouds, the clouds that generate thunderstorms, as most converge over the UAE in the winter, he added. Abdullah Ahmad Al Mandoos, Executive Director of NCMS, said the cloud seeding test was successful and more experiments would be conducted in the next three months but depending on the weather conditions.

The centre has its own aircraft that is used for sprinkling cloud seeding salts in the moist clouds. The sprinklers are attached to the wings of the aircraft that drop the salt from a certain height on the clouds. A total of 200 flights were undertaken during the winter and summer of 2001. About half of the flights collected microphysical data in clouds and precipitation, with seeding trials having been performed on about half of those flights. Further studies continued during 2003 and 2004.

We dream of being able to modify the weather, especially as pearls of perspiration line brows and march down collars. It may not be such an outlandish idea if one goes by cloud seeding. It is a science that can be used to control winds, suppress hail, dissolve fog or create rain. Scientists have been dabbling in it since 1946, when Dr Vincent J. Shaefer conducted his first field experiments in New York. Today nearly 40 countries are working with it, foremost being China.

Rumour has it that not a cloud shall pass over Beijing Olympics opening ceremony. It also plans to use cloud seeding to clear the air pollution problem.

It rains because millions of extremely tiny water droplets come together around a nuclei, which could be anything from sand, smoke, salt or dust, to form one big drop of rain. There are two basic forms of rain - warm and cold. Warm rain is from clouds, in tropical regions, with temperatures never colder than 0C. Cold rain happens when the cloud temperatures are lower than 0C. This is the natural process, in case of cloud seeding different types of cloud condensation nuclei are artificially introduced to accelerate the warm rain or cold rain process. However, it can only be done if the cloud system is of the necessary size, with sufficient lifespan and has enough water saturation. Most scientists say it is all about assisting nature. Seeding is done using flares dropped from aircrafts or shot from the ground using artillery or rockets. You also have hygroscopic seeding that introduces salt crystals, which function as bigger nuclei to accelerate the warm rain process.

As nations look for answers to the problem of water shortage, controlled cloud seeding could be one of the key options.

Weekendje Ras al Khaimah

Afgelopen weekend heeft Thijs zijn meisjes verrast met een weekendje in de Hilton in Ras al Khaimah oftewel RAK. RAK is 1 van de 7 emiraten en ligt zo een 1,5 uur rijden ten noorden van Dubai. Nadat we donderdag middag de meisjes hadden opgehaald van school en creche zijn we naar RAK gereden.

In de stad en het emiraat is niet zo heel veel te beleven, alhoewel ook hier ontzettend veel gebouwd wordt. Wij, en vooral de meisjes, vonden dit niet zo een probleem. Het hotel was heel mooi en we vonden dus snel onze weg naar het zwembad. Floortje zwom voor het eerst met kurkjes en dat ging super goed. Famke zwemt meer onder water dan boven! Vrijdag en zaterdag meer van hetzelfde! Zaterdag middag zijn we via de Barracuda Hotel weer terug naar Dubai gereden. De Barracuda Hotel wordt in de volksmond ook wel 'the hole in the wall' genoemd. Je kunt hier namelijk zonder 'liquor license' alcohol kopen zonder de 30% belasting die je in Dubai wel moet betalen. Ondanks dat dit ruim een uur rijden is van Dubai, staat de hele parkeerplaats vol met auto's (4x4's!) met Dubai kentekens!

Oranje Feesten in Dubai

Donderdag avond 24 april was het jaarlijkse Oranjefeest op de Emirates Golfclub. Het was weer geweldig geregeld met alles erop en eraan. Haring uit Volendam (inclusief haring boer en vrouw - komen al 20 jaar naar Dubai voor dit feest), Unox worst, snackbar, poffertjes en natuurlijk Heineken bier! De band 'Worst of the 80s' was ook over gevlogen uit Nederland samen met Hans van der Togt (!?). De niet-nederlanders op dit feest keken hun ogen uit! Wat een lange mensen allemaal!

Op zaterdag 26 april was het voor de nederlandse kinderen in Dubai feest. Barbara was met 4 andere dames al maanden druk bezig geweest met de voorbereidingen. Van 10 tot 12 was er op de Dubai International Academy van alles georganiseerd: oud hollandse spelletjes, poppenkast, knutselen, cake-jes versieren en de koningin kwam ook op bezoek! Je kon zelfs met de koninklijke familie op de foto. Een groot succes!

US President George W. Bush was given a tour of the booming Gulf emirate of Dubai on Monday before leaving for Saudi Arabia to continue his tour of the Middle East.

The soaring Persian Gulf city-state is Bush’s second stop in the seven-state United Arab Emirates federation, following his gentle lecture on democracy in Abu Dhabi and an opulent picnic at a desert horse camp Sunday. The Dubai visit is part of a trip aimed at invigorating Mideast peace talks and keeping pressure on Iran.

Even before Bush touched down in Dubai, he had an impact. The government declared Monday a national holiday and shut down many main roads and bridges.
