Kindness

Like we have done in years before, Floortje and I made up some small tokens of kindness that we could leave in places for people to find. Just spreading a bit of joy in the holiday season!

We would put them in shopping trolleys, leave them on a chair, hang them on car doors or put them in with the signed cc receipt at restaurants.  So much fun to do!

Tempting not to wait and secretly watch how people react. One lady in IKEA took it from her trolley and threw it on the floor, needless to say we picked it up and tried again with someone else. Hope the other people were a bit more appreciative, but I am sure they were.

Floortje's first 18 holes

For the last 1.5 years Floortje has been taking golf lessons. She is really enjoying it and just recently has had the chance to go out on the course and play. However, never 18 holes. So after Christmas she went out with Thijs and my mom and dad for a complete round.
As her coach told her, she would tee off around 150 yards from the hole and play it from there. We figured she might be fed up about half way through but she played all 18 holes! She loved racing the cart and also got some good advice from her dad.
Well done Floor!

Oxheart

A few restaurants in Houston have been on our list to check out and try. At the top of the list was Oxheart and with my parents in town to look after the girls we had a chance to go. It is located in the warehouse district and has an industrial feel to it. A lot of the dishes are vegetable based.

We sat at the counter from which we had a great view into the kitchen. Very nice dinner!

Elf on the Shelf

In recent years 'The Elf on the Shelf' has become a big thing here in the US. For those of you who are not familiar with this Elf, here a short description copied from Wikipedia:

The story describes how Santa's "scout Elves" hide in people's homes to watch over events. Once everyone goes to bed, the scout elf flies back to the North Pole to report to Santa the activities, good and bad, that have taken place throughout the day. Before the family wakes up each morning, the scout elf flies back from the North Pole and hides. By hiding in a new spot each morning around the house, the scout elf and the family play an on-going game of hide and seek.

The Elf on the Shelf explains that scout elves get their magic by being named. In the back of each book, families have an opportunity to write their elf's name and the date that they adopted it. Once the elf is named, the scout elf receives its special Christmas magic, which allows it to fly to and from the North Pole.

The book tells how the magic might disappear if the scout elf is touched, so the rule for The Elf on the Shelf states, "There's only one rule that you have to follow, so I will come back and be here tomorrow: Please do not touch me. My magic might go, and Santa won't hear all I've seen or I know." Although families are told not to touch their scout elf, they can speak to it and tell it all their Christmas wishes so that it can report back to Santa accurately.

It started with a book story but has grown out to something quite big. As Sinterklaas visits us and Santa Claus does not (we have always told the girls that Sinterklaas comes for Dutch kids and Santa for English kids, and this has always been fine) Thijs and I have never felt the 'need' for an Elf. However this year Floortje was asking us if an Elf could please visit us. As I love the thought of kids still believing in 'magic' an Elf appeared at our house on the 1st of December bringing with it this letter.

The girls decided to name her Winter.

As you read above the Elf moves to a different spot in the house each night and sometimes gets up to some mischief. Even though it is very cute to have an Elf visit I could do without the evenings when already in bed and then thinking: s#?t, I forgot to move the Elf!

Famke is in on the secret but Floortje just loved it! Although I really do wonder how much she is trying to keep up appearances to make sure the Elf comes back next year..... :)

Here a few impressions of what our Elf has been up to.

Houston Rockets

A new first! After the Astros, Aeros and Texans, it was time for a visit to the Houston Rockets at the Toyota Center. Thijs had been before but a first for my dad, Famke and me!

Very fun night and the Rockets won!

Painting

We love the house we live in but have never (especially me) loved the kitchen.  Brown is just not my thing.  We looked into changing it for another kitchen but it would cost a lot of money!

So we decided to paint it.  The kitchen gray and all the walls in the house white!

For three weeks the house was a bit of a mess with two painters moving from one room to the other. The hardest part was the kitchen as we couldn't use it for almost a week. But it was definitely worth all the hassle!

Wow, what a difference.  I am so very happy with the result!

Thanksgiving

This year we spent Thanksgiving with Frederik, Marlies, Rob, Christel and all the kids at Texas Ranch Life.  A ranch about an hour away from Katy.

It was a great weekend!  We introduced them to geocaching, went for a walk in one of the State Parks, Thijs and Frederik biked, the kids rode horses and we ate and drank! Too much, but boy was it good!

Great weekend!

Color run

Ran the color run with Floortje this morning around the lake near our house. Like last year it was organized by Famke's school and despite the rain it was a lot of fun!

And this is a cool pic I 'stole' from the PTA FB page. If you look closely you can find me in there :)
Love how all the color in the air in captured!

Burgers with Sylvia

Sylvia is visiting us at the moment. Between school, sports and all the other regular activities (oh did I mention our house is also being painted at the moment) we are trying to show her a little of Texas as well. When we asked her what was still on her list she answered: 'I would like to have a really good burger somewhere'.

A quick Google search returned quite a few burger places in and around Houston and we settled on Bernie's Burger Bus. Good choice!

Bernie's Burger Bus is opening in Katy this weekend, might be dangerous......

Friends reunited

During a recent trip to the Middle East, Thijs was lucky enough to catch up with Klaas and Ingrid in Dubai.  Was a bit jealous when I received the pictures on my phone....

Poezeoma in Texas

Here some pictures that were taken during October/November when poezeoma came to visit.

We went on a trip to the Buffalo Bayou where she experimented with her new selfie stick :) and had a very nice lunch afterwards at the Backstreet Cafe. Dinner at Grimaldi's is always part of the routine

Halloween

Yes, I know! Way behind on posting this year. Not sure if I can catch up again but I will try to show some improvement for the rest of the year.....

Halloween was on a Saturday night this year, nice! All week it was not looking too good weather wise but we were lucky! By trick-or-treat time it had dried up and the kids were able to do their rounds. Famke as Hermione from Harry Potter and Floortje as a bunny rabbit.

3 on 3 basketball

After having a great time during the basketball season last year Floortje decided to also compete in 3 on 3 this year.  This is (as you probably figured) 3 against 3 on a half court.  The fun part is that because they are fewer players you get the ball a lot more.  Floortje did really well and we were amazed at the progress she made when comparing it to last year.  Bring on the 5 on 5 season!

Harvest

For the sedan year in a row I have tried planting a vegetable garden in my backyard.  Last year the rabbits enjoyed it very much....

This year I decided to put some protection around the garden but the harvest was still very mediocre...

I'll give it one more try next spring

Shop

While we were in Dubai and the girls were still small my mom and dad made this little shop for them.  They have had so much fun playing with but have now outgrown it.  Therefore we decided to sell it and it is now being enjoyed by a Dutch-American family. Hope their kids will have as much fun with it as Famke and Floortje did.

Just wanted to post a picture here so we wouldn't forget about it.

First day of school

After three months of summer vacation the girls said they were not quite ready to go back to school. They confirmed this by really struggling to get up this morning :)

However when they came home this afternoon both of them had positive stories and Floortje even told me that fourth grade was the best grade so far!

Way to go girls!

Geuze family visit

After a huge road trip through California, Arizona, Utah and probably some more states, Marijn, Anita, Annemijn and Marcus came for a short visit to Katy.

So much fun to have them here and share a bit of our life with them! We must have been very busy because I did not take many pictures.  In the first picture the kids are playing BeanBoozled, a game with disgusting tasting jelly beans.  The other two were taken at TopGolf.

Thanks for coming to see us!

Football season has started!

Last night we were lucky enough to have tickets for the opening preseason game of the Texans against the San Fransisco 49-ears. With over 71000 people attending it was a full and noisyhouse. Lots of fun watching the team try out different players and tactics. And a win is always good for the confidence going into the season :)

The Astros are doing well this year! 60-46 as we speak and first in their division!

Time to go see it live! Go Astros!

Fun on the boat

Marc's new boat is even nicer than the old ones so a few trips were taken this summer!

Dutch friends

This is Floortje with her Dutch friends.  They are Sanne and Lisa and live next to my mom and dad in Aalsmeer.  Every summer when we arrive the girls pick up where they left off.  So nice to see.  This year Floortje even went to school with them for a day.

Fun with friends

Always so nice to catch up with friends while in Holland.  So also today with Martina and Lisa.  We met an amusement park called Oud Valkeveen.  Big enough for the girls to entertain themselves, small enough for them not to get lost.  So while the girls explored we sat at a table and caught up.

Weekend Texel

To celebrate their anniversary my mom and dad had invited Marc and Diana for a weekend Texel ( we had already celebrated the vent in Galveston at the beach).  Now as it turned out the weekend they had picked was a weekend that the girls and I would also be in Holland so we were invited to come along.

What a great weekend, with so many things to do:

Walks on the beach
Lovely lunches
Taking the ferry across
A facial for the ladies
An incredible breakfast buffet
Beautiful hotel
Fun geocaches
A visit to Ecomare
Skuumkoppe biertjes and a visit to the brewery
Hugging little lambs
A visit to the lighthouse
Great dinners
Trip on a fishing boat to catch shrimp and see sunning seals

But above all: wonderful company (we really missed you Thijs!)

Thanks pap en mam!
