Fastest highway in US

Yesterday we drove home from San Antonio (via a slight detour) to Houston. During our trip we drove for a few miles on Texas Highway 130, the fastest highway in the United States of America. On a 40 mile stretch from San Antonio to Austin the speed limit is 85 mph (136.8 kph)!!!! It is a toll road so you do have to pay 0.15 cents per mile but Thijs thought it was worth it!

Some background on the speed limits rules in the US from Wikipedia

Speed limits in the United States are set by each state or territory. Speed limits vary primarily due to state laws, but also due to the type of road, land use, and more.

Increments of five miles per hour are used. Some states have lower limits for trucks and night. Occasionally, there are minimum speed limits.

Most speed limits are set by statute, although each state allows various agencies to set a different, usually lower, limit.

The highest speed limits are generally 75 mph (121 km/h) in western states and 70 mph (113 km/h) in eastern states. A few states, mainly in the Northeast Megalopolis, have 65 mph (105 km/h) limits, and Hawaii only has 60 mph (97 km/h) maximum limits. A small portion of the Texas and Utah road networks have higher limits.

For thirteen years (1974–1987), federal law prohibited speed limits above 55 mph (89 km/h).

Mardi Gras in San Antonio

Mardi Gras is what Americans refer to as our carnival. It is not celebrated in all of the US but especially in Louisiana it is a big thing. Texans like to party too so in most cities there will be Mardi Gras parades.

With Gerda in town we decided to go to San Antonio for the night and see what it was all about. As San Antonio has a river going through it, the parade was on the water with boats.

We walked along the river walk and stopped at the open air theatre to listen to the band. When the boats came by the girls had to battle with hundreds of others to catch the traditional beads that are thrown. The pickings were thin...

As the boats would be going around twice we decided to walk a it a try and find a more strategic place for catching beads.

We succeeded!!!

Every boat that passed threw their beads right at the girls! Check out the result!!!

After all this excitement the girls wanted to relax for a bit in the hot tub, however they could not resist the urge to get into the big (very cold) pool! Bikkels!!!!

Tooth fairy

From previous posts you know that our girls know the secret about the tooth fairy.

So I couldn't help but smile today when Floortje came home with the drawing below, pointed at the fairy and said 'Look mum, that's you! But the teacher wouldn't let me draw you next to my bed on the floor. She said you had to fly above my bed'. Sweet!

Cool geocache

We found a geocache in a very cool location today. Great hide!

On the slide

Today Gerda made a great picture of the girls on the slide!

Skiing with the boys

Last week Thijs, Michiel and Peter spent a few days in Copper Mountain, Colorado.  Skiing was the main reason but I think the other pictures sum up the rest of the weekend :)
