Fiets diploma

Na veel ge-ren, hard werken, gesleutel aan de fietsen heeft opa zijn doel bereikt! De meiden kunnen fietsen!  Een fietsdiploma was dus wel op zijn plaats.  Gefeliciteerd meiden, bedankt opa!!!!

Christmas

We had a lovely Christmas with opa & oma here in Dubai.  While everyone in Holland was enjoying a white christmas we enjoyed having our breakfast in shorts.  We exchanged presents on Christmas eve while drinking a nice bottle of bubbly.  On Christmas day my dad and I cooked a nice dinner which we enjoyed with the girls (in beautiful new dresses with spanish shoes!) next to the christmas tree.  Boxing day was spent lazing by the pool :)

Kidzania

Last year Famke had a school trip to Kidzania and ever since that day she has been asking if we can go again. So we finally made the trip to the Dubai Mall for a visit.  Kidzania is a mini city were kids can earn and spend 'kidzos' (Kidzania currency).  They can earn money by working in the different companies like the dentist, ambulance, fire department, building site, TNT post, and many other occupations.  They can make their own happy meal at McDonalds, make pizza at Pizza Express or spend their money making a real bottle of Coca Cola.  It is really an amazing place and the girls had a great day!

World Championship Swimming

This weekend the FINA World Championship 25m swimming was held in Dubai.  A brand new venue has been build for this.  Yesterday we checked out the heats in the morning and cheered on the dutch swimmers.  Especially the ladies did very well.  In the evening the girls won a gold medal in 4x100 freestyle event!

VK UPDATE  DUBAI - De Nederlandse estafetteploeg heeft vandaag voor de derde keer in successie de wereldtitel op de 4x100 meter vrije slag in het 25-meterbad veroverd. De equipe van kopvrouw Ranomi Kromowidjojo bleef in het Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Sports Complex de concurrentie uit de Verenigde Staten (tweede) en China (derde) ruim voor. De Oranje-zwemsters klokten een tijd van 3.28,54 en bleven daarmee slechts 0,32 boven hun eigen wereldrecord.

Die toptijd werd overigens wel in het tijdperk van de ultrasnelle polyurethaanpakken gezwommen, hetgeen deze prestatie extra glans geeft. 'Iedereen verwacht dat we hier het goud pakken. Dat we het dan vervolgens weer doen, is toch bijzonder', reageerde Femke Heemskerk, die eveneens lid was van de equipe die in 2008 op deze discipline de olympische titel veroverde.

 

Derde

Toch lag Nederland na honderd meter 'slechts' derde. Startzwemster Heemskerk klokte een tijd van 52,33 seconden, maar zag dat de Amerikaanse Natalie Coughlin al na 51,88 aantikte. Dat was precies een seconde onder het wereldrecordschema van de Nederlandse ploeg eind 2008 in Amsterdam. Inge Dekker maakte met een splittijd van 52,47 al enige achterstand goed. Hinkelien Schreuder imponeerde vervolgens met 52,32. Ze liet Kromowidjojo als eerste te water gaan voor de afsluitende vier baantjes. De wereldkampioene op de 100 vrij sloeg met 51,42 de aanval van Dana Vollmer (51,46) en Li Zhesi (52,00) met groot gemak af.

 

'Het was onze strategie om hard van start te gaan. Ik had eigenlijk wel gedacht om uit de golven in het water te duiken', sprak Schreuder lachend. 'Maar uiteindelijk is het toch allemaal goed gekomen. We hebben net geen wereldrecord gezwommen, maar waren wel sneller dan bij de vorige WK in Manchester. En toen droegen we nog allemaal die snelle pakken.'

 

Finale

Een uur eerder stelden Kromowidjojo en Schreuder al hun plek veilig in de WK-finale van de 50 meter vrije slag. Kromowidjojo deed dat uitermate overtuigend. De wereldkampioene op de 100 vrij bleef als enige deelneemster onder de 24 seconden: 23,71. Schreuder ging als vierde naar de eindstrijd, met een tijd van 24,16.

 

Ook Dekker had even daarvoor een plek in de eindstrijd veroverd. Ze eindigde in de halve finale van de 100 meter vlinderslag als zesde: 56,85. Thérèse Alshammar maakte de meeste indruk. De Zweedse had 55,99 seconden nodig voor de afstand en ging daarmee als eerste naar de finale.

 

Van Aggele

Robin van Aggele presteerde uitstekend in de halve finales van de 50 meter schoolslag. De Europees kampioen noteerde een tijd van 26,41 seconden en werd daarmee als derde gerangschikt. Daarmee ligt hij op medaillekoers voor de finale die zondagavond wordt gehouden. De Braziliaan Felipe Silva klokte de beste tijd. Hij tikte na 26,22 seconden aan.

Floortje A Diploma!

Floortje heeft gisteren haar A diploma gehaald!  Met nog 8 andere Nederlandse kindjes hebben ze afgezwommen volgens de Nederlandse diploma normen.  Aan het eind mochten Fam en ik met Floortje en een hoop balonnen het water in om het te vieren.

Fat Duck

During our last visit to Holland in November Thijs and I were able to spend a few days in London (bedankt opa en oma!).  This turned out to be somewhat of a culinary event with sushi at Harrod's, dinner at the River Cafe and the highlight of the trip: lunch at the Fat Duck in Bray!  Bray is a 30 minute trainride from Paddington station so after a light breakfast we started our journey.  By about 12.15 we were seated and the experience started!  At 5 we left the restaurant again.  Absolutely amazing!!!!  Below some pictures and comments from our afternoon at the Fat Duck.

A “palate cleanser”, lime mousse poached in liquid nitrogen and sprinkled with green tea dust, was an extraordinary sensation. Very, very cold!

Red cabbage gazpacho with mustard ice cream

“Jelly of quail, crayfish cream” sat in a cute tilted bowl next to a wooden block supporting a delicate black truffle toast.  We ate this dish, though, as the entire table disappeared under a soft blanket of bright white nitrogen, frothing and bouncing in between glassware and cutlery and spilling onto our laps. 

Next up,  “snail porridge”. It was a delicious bowl of pea risotto topped with a couple of moist snails and an topping of shaved fennel and Spanish ham.

Roast foie gras with rhubarb

The Mad Hatter Tea Party was magical. First of all we were presented with a bowl of intricately arranged delicacies, including a cauliflower and mushroom mousse and a kind of pressed calf terrine. Then a waiter arrived with a glass-topped box containing what looked like gold wristwatches, but were in fact highly concentrated beef stock covered in gold leaf. The “watches”, once dunked in hot water, dissolved into a hot beef “tea”, which you then poured into the bowl. 

“Sounds of the Sea” is a Fat Duck classic. A slice of raw fish were served on top of ‘sand’ made out of ground tapioca flavored with smoked eel and a shellfish foam. You eat this dish listening to a soundtrack of seagulls and crashing waves on a iPod hidden in a giant conch shell.

Salmon poached inside liquorice, artichokes, grapefruit and vanilla mayonaise.   

Venison with an amazing risotto!

“Hot & Iced Tea” It looked like a normal glass of liquid, and certainly smelled like tea, but one half of it was cold and one half was hot, vertically!  The left hand side was cold and the right hand side was hot. Such a surprise when you start drinking!

“BFG” (Black Forest Gateau)

A clever whisky map, with little wine gums made from various different varieties which you peeled off in a designated order. It’s interesting just how much of the flavours of the original product survived the ‘wine gumification’.

The last course came in a handy little bag marked “Sweet Shop” and contained various 'sweets': a toffee in an edible plastic wrapper which tasted of apple, a bag of coconut flavoured ‘tobacco’ infused with a real tobacco flavour, and most amazing of all what looked like a thick playing card but was actually a slice of white chocolate with a thin layer of raspberry jam inside.
