Oxheart
A few restaurants in Houston have been on our list to check out and try. At the top of the list was Oxheart and with my parents in town to look after the girls we had a chance to go. It is located in the warehouse district and has an industrial feel to it. A lot of the dishes are vegetable based.
We sat at the counter from which we had a great view into the kitchen. Very nice dinner!
Elf on the Shelf
In recent years 'The Elf on the Shelf' has become a big thing here in the US. For those of you who are not familiar with this Elf, here a short description copied from Wikipedia:
The story describes how Santa's "scout Elves" hide in people's homes to watch over events. Once everyone goes to bed, the scout elf flies back to the North Pole to report to Santa the activities, good and bad, that have taken place throughout the day. Before the family wakes up each morning, the scout elf flies back from the North Pole and hides. By hiding in a new spot each morning around the house, the scout elf and the family play an on-going game of hide and seek.
The Elf on the Shelf explains that scout elves get their magic by being named. In the back of each book, families have an opportunity to write their elf's name and the date that they adopted it. Once the elf is named, the scout elf receives its special Christmas magic, which allows it to fly to and from the North Pole.
The book tells how the magic might disappear if the scout elf is touched, so the rule for The Elf on the Shelf states, "There's only one rule that you have to follow, so I will come back and be here tomorrow: Please do not touch me. My magic might go, and Santa won't hear all I've seen or I know." Although families are told not to touch their scout elf, they can speak to it and tell it all their Christmas wishes so that it can report back to Santa accurately.
It started with a book story but has grown out to something quite big. As Sinterklaas visits us and Santa Claus does not (we have always told the girls that Sinterklaas comes for Dutch kids and Santa for English kids, and this has always been fine) Thijs and I have never felt the 'need' for an Elf. However this year Floortje was asking us if an Elf could please visit us. As I love the thought of kids still believing in 'magic' an Elf appeared at our house on the 1st of December bringing with it this letter.
The girls decided to name her Winter.
As you read above the Elf moves to a different spot in the house each night and sometimes gets up to some mischief. Even though it is very cute to have an Elf visit I could do without the evenings when already in bed and then thinking: s#?t, I forgot to move the Elf!
Famke is in on the secret but Floortje just loved it! Although I really do wonder how much she is trying to keep up appearances to make sure the Elf comes back next year..... :)
Here a few impressions of what our Elf has been up to.

Houston Rockets
A new first! After the Astros, Aeros and Texans, it was time for a visit to the Houston Rockets at the Toyota Center. Thijs had been before but a first for my dad, Famke and me!
Very fun night and the Rockets won!

Color run
Ran the color run with Floortje this morning around the lake near our house. Like last year it was organized by Famke's school and despite the rain it was a lot of fun!

Burgers with Sylvia
Sylvia is visiting us at the moment. Between school, sports and all the other regular activities (oh did I mention our house is also being painted at the moment) we are trying to show her a little of Texas as well. When we asked her what was still on her list she answered: 'I would like to have a really good burger somewhere'.
A quick Google search returned quite a few burger places in and around Houston and we settled on Bernie's Burger Bus. Good choice!
Bernie's Burger Bus is opening in Katy this weekend, might be dangerous......

Halloween
Yes, I know! Way behind on posting this year. Not sure if I can catch up again but I will try to show some improvement for the rest of the year.....
Halloween was on a Saturday night this year, nice! All week it was not looking too good weather wise but we were lucky! By trick-or-treat time it had dried up and the kids were able to do their rounds. Famke as Hermione from Harry Potter and Floortje as a bunny rabbit.

First day of school
After three months of summer vacation the girls said they were not quite ready to go back to school. They confirmed this by really struggling to get up this morning :)
However when they came home this afternoon both of them had positive stories and Floortje even told me that fourth grade was the best grade so far!
Way to go girls!

Football season has started!
Last night we were lucky enough to have tickets for the opening preseason game of the Texans against the San Fransisco 49-ears. With over 71000 people attending it was a full and noisyhouse. Lots of fun watching the team try out different players and tactics. And a win is always good for the confidence going into the season :)

The Astros are doing well this year! 60-46 as we speak and first in their division!
Time to go see it live! Go Astros!
